Karni Sena leader booked for ‘insulting’ remarks on SP MP Iqra Hasan

An FIR has been registered against Rana under section 79 and 356 (2) of the BNS and the section 67 of the IT Act.

Karni Sena leader booked for remarks on SP MP IqraKatghar Circle Officer (CO) Ashish Pratap Singh said the case was registered on Sunday.

An FIR has been lodged in Moradabad against Karni Sena’s national vice-president Yogendra Rana after a video he posted online, in which had declared his “intention to marry” Samajwadi Party MP from Kairana, Iqra Hasan, went viral and triggered widespread criticism.

Confirming the development, Katghar Circle Officer (CO) Ashish Pratap Singh said that the case was registered on Sunday. The video which had been posted on July 18 had drawn strong reactions on social media for its language and tone. The video was posted by Rana , and was deleted within two hours after backlash grew online.

In the now-deleted video, Rana was lying on his bed as he proposed that the woman MP get married to him and he would permit her to namaz at his house.

His comments were widely criticised as disrespectful and demeaning.

An FIR has been lodged against Rana for intending to insult a woman’s modesty, defamation and and 356 (2) of the BNS and publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form. The complaint in the matter was submitted by a Moradabad-based Advocate Sunita. Referring to the post, the FIR stated, “…not only the dignity of a female public representative has been hurt publicly, but statements have been made against social harmony, women’s honor and dignity.”

“The woman may belong to any class, any community, but she is a woman, someone’s daughter, and everyone’s daughter is equal, so such dirty comments cannot be tolerated,” the complaint said.

Hasan was amongst the youngest MPs elected in the 2024 elections, she comes from a family with a political background — her brother is a three-time MLA from Kairana and Iqra is the fourth Kairana MP to be elected from the family — after her grandfather, father and mother.

This controversy comes weeks after Iqra Hasan accused Saharanpur ADM Santosh Bahadur Singh of misbehaving with her during a meeting she attended on July 1, along with Chhutmalpur Nagar Panchayat chairperson Shama Parveen.
