A 22-year-old national karate champion beat up a man who allegedly tried to molest her. The incident was reported from North Delhi’s Burari area on Friday night, police said.
In a complaint to police, the woman stated that the accused, Rajesh Gupta (22), had been harassing her for the past three months.
Police said she was on her way home after her training session at the karate institute, when Gupta approached her. He reportedly asked her to accompany him. The woman claimed that when she refused, Gupta forcibly held her arm and touched her inappropriately.
“The woman then punched him in the face and stomach in self defence,” an officer said. Gupta then fled the spot and returned with four friends.
“By then, the woman had called her coach for help and made a PCR call. Before a fight could ensue between both parties, police reached the spot and detained the accused,” the officer said.
A case of molestation has been registered and Gupta and his friends have been detained, the officer said.
“The woman also said that Gupta had proposed her several times, but she had always declined. She also alleged that Gupta used to stalk her but she ignored him, thinking it was not serious,” the officer said.
The woman had recently attended a karate championship in Beijing and has bagged several awards at the state and national level.
