Around 15 major routes in Delhi are expected to face traffic congestion on Friday as over 20 lakh ‘Kanwars’ are expected to flock to the capital as part of the annual pilgrimage that began on Friday, a Delhi Traffic Police advisory said. The authorities have also imposed traffic diversions for heavy vehicles in the NCR region.
The routes expected to face traffic congestion are Najafgarh Phirni, Rohtak Road, Pankha Road, Dev Prakash Shastri Marg, Nangloi-Najafgarh Road, Outer Ring Road, Rani Jhansi Road from Baraf Khana Chowk to Fire Station, Boulevard Road, and at Azad Market Chowk, Gokul Puri Fly Over, 66 Foota Road, Maujpur Chowk, Badarpur T Point, and Mathura Road. Similarly, traffic congestion will be experienced on NH-08 from Dhaula Kuan Metro Station up to Rajokri Border.
The advisory will be in place till July 23, when the pilgrimage of Shiva devotees concludes, said the police.
Due to traffic diversion, vehicles bound for Apsara Border and Maharajpur Border to Ghazipur, there will be congestion on NH-24 as well, stated the Uttar Pradesh Police.
Major diversions of vehicles, especially Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTV), are expected to be done to accommodate the fleet of the Kanwars.
Barring city buses or public transport vehicles, heavy vehicles will not be allowed on the GT Road towards Shahdara and Wazirabad Road. They will be diverted towards NH-09 and will not be allowed to move on Wazirabad Road, GT Road towards Shahdara and Vikas Marg.
Heavy commercial transport vehicles coming from Shahdara will have to avoid the usual internal routes via Sonia Vihar and Pusta Road and will be diverted towards Outer Ring Road via Wazirabad Road to take NH-24, according to the advisory.
The entry of the Kanwars from Uttar Pradesh is expected to be through either the Loni border via Loni flyover or from the side of Sonia Vihar border via the Pusta Road. The Kanwars will then embark on different routes in the capital, which include Seelampur ‘T’ Point – ISBT Flyover Boulevard Road in North East Delhi, Dhaula Kuan – NH-8 stretch in South Delhi, Kalindi Kunj – Mathura Road stretch in South East, which would lead to an exit from either Rajokri Border or Badarpur border for Haryana.
