Three months after 20-year-old Anjali Singh was hit by a car, and dragged for several kilometres before she died, the Delhi Police Saturday filed an 800-page chargesheet in the case.
The incident took place in the early hours of January 1. Singh was killed after her scooter was hit by the car and was later dragged for 10-12 km from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala before the occupants of the car abandoned her body.
DCP (Outer) Harendra Kumar Singh said, “On completion of the investigation, chargesheet of about 800 pages has been prepared with around 117 witnesses cited in the present case. On the basis of material and evidence collected, sufficient material has come on record to prosecute seven persons.”
The seven men have been identified as Manoj Mittal, Amit Khanna, Krishan alias Kalu, Mithun alias Arjun, Deepak Khanna, Ankush Khanna and Ashutosh Bhardwaj. The DCP said that Amit, Krishan, Mithun and Manoj have been booked under IPC Section 302 (murder). Ashutosh and Amit have been booked under the Motor Vehicles Act, police said. Amit has also been booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by endangering life or personal safety of others).
While Deepak, Amit, Krishan, Manoj and Mithun are currently in judicial custody, the DCP said, Ashutosh and Ankush Khanna have been out on bail. “The file is being submitted on April 1 in the Hon’ble Court of Ms Sanya Dalal, Metropolitan Magistrate, Rohini Court, for judicial verdict and trial,” he said.
Police sources later said the hearing has been deferred to April 14 as the court has not taken cognizance of the chargesheet.
Earlier, police had not invoked the murder charge. However, the development came three weeks after the incident, when Special CP (Law & Order) Sagar Preet Hooda said: “After collection of physical, oral, forensic and other scientific evidence, police added IPC Section 302 to the FIR.”
Police had also told a court earlier that the accused knew Anjali was stuck under the wheels of their car, on the basis of new CCTV footage.
Anjali is survived by her mother and five siblings. She had lost her father 8-9 years ago.
