A team of Amboli police on Monday found a head and arm in a bag in a jungle at Kumbharli Ghat near Chiplun, which they claimed were the remains of Karan Kakad (28).

The aspiring producer had been untraceable since March 6 after being kidnapped. According to police officers, other body parts were also scattered at the same location.

Police sources confirmed Kakad was killed at his residence in Andheri (West) by three men arrested for Arun Tikku’s murder the same day Kakad went missing. Police said after murdering Kakad, the accused chopped up his body and drove down to the spot where the remains were found.

Kakad, who was originally from Delhi and had been staying in the city for the past year, had been missing since March 6,along with his BMW car, gold ornaments,iPod,mobile phone and laptop, collectively valued at Rs 45.44 lakh, police said. Officers had voiced apprehensions that he may have been murdered by his kidnappers.

“Vijay Palande, the main accused in the case, revealed that he along with Dhananjay Shinde and Manoj Gajkosh had gone to Kakad’s rented residence in Oberoi Springs Tower in Andheri (West) on March 6 and killed him. They also chopped the body and disposed it of,” said a senior police officer.

“In the Tikku murder case, the accused brought a bag to dispose of his body. We suspect Palande might have disposed of Kakad’s body in a bag as well,” said Pratap Dighavkar,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9).

Palande reportedly told police that he had dumped Kakad’s body on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, but didn’t give the exact location.

Police sources claimed Kakad had recently cracked a deal that fetched him Rs 88 lakh, and Palande targeted him when he learnt of this. Palande had taken a loan of Rs 15 lakh from Kakad, saying a friend needed the money, sources said.

Palande,Shinde and Gajkosh were booked by the Amboli police on Thursday for Kakad’s kidnapping. The trio were arrested two days earlier by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch for their alleged role in the murder of Tikku, who was found stabbed to death at his son’s apartment in Lokhandwala on April 7. On Friday, the police arrested Sood for her alleged role in the kidnapping.

The police traced Kakad’s BMW car to a bungalow owned by one Rahul Mane in Pune on Sunday. Mane, who is a lawyer, had represented Palande in an earlier case, officers said.
