Three months after he assumed office as the Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, former vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia Najeeb Jung continues to reside at the vice-chancellor’s lodge in Jamia Nagar.

“Everyone here is a friend, but I have overstayed my welcome at Jamia. I am still living at the house (the V-C lodge) for at least two-and-a-half months now,” Jung said, while addressing his former colleagues during an exhibition by professor Pankaj Sharma at the M F Hussain Art Gallery.

While blaming the “inefficiency” of the Public Works Department for the delay in shifting to Raj Niwas,Jung praised the Jamia administration, which he claimed had taken only a a month to set up the V-C’s lodge in Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Enclave, when he had moved in there. “But,the PWD has been making repairs for months,” he said.

The Public Works Department spokesperson Ravi Mathur told Newsline that the repairs were taking time as the brand, colour and other details of the materials used for the renovation were yet to be finalised. He said the choice of residents also had to be accommodated while making the changes.

Without setting a deadline for the work,Mathur said,“The kitchen and corridors are areas which need the most work.”

D C Goel, the project manager in charge of the repairs, said the work was almost complete. “We are not making any structural changes,” he said.
