A storm is brewing in a cup of coffee in JNU yet again, and its Cafe Coffee Day Express in the eye of the storm this time.
After successfully resisting the setting up of a 24×7 Nestle outlet in 2004 and replacing it with a 24-hour dhaba, students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have now raised their voices against a Cafe Coffee Day Express outlet that has come up inside the School of Life Sciences.
Calling it a blatant commercialisation of the campus,JNU students union president Sandeep Singh said,The entry of this outlet into the campus is a shameful attempt to tamper with JNUs socially sensitive shop allotment policy.
Shops in the JNU campus are not allotted on the basis of a bidding system, but on the basis of a need-based system wherein the need of the campus and the financial situation of the prospective shopkeeper are considered,he added.
The JNU administration had not consulted any member of the Campus Development Committee (CDC),the body responsible for shop allotment in the university,Singh alleged. The new outlet, unlike a typical JNU dhaba,is inside a building, adding to its exclusivity.
Vivek Kumar, convener of the CDCs sub-committee on shop allotment, also expressed ignorance on the matter. Iam not aware of it,he said.
Dean of Students Welfare V K Jain said the administration had received a complaint on the matter and they were looking into it.
