JNU: student body discusses action against policies

The JNU Students Union held a general body meeting on Thursday evening to discuss future course of action after the university Vice-Chancellor refused to make changes in policies related to the campus.

The JNU Students Union (JNUSU) held a general body meeting on Thursday evening to discuss future course of action after the university Vice-Chancellor refused to make changes in policies related to the campus.

In a meeting held between members of the Students Union and V-C B B Bhattacharya on Wednesday,the latter is said to have directed the students to stop their protests.

The VC said the JNUSU is illegal following a Supreme Court stay on the university elections and that the protests will have no effect on campus policies, said Bharat Kumar,a student.

The JNUSU and the administration are at loggerheads over issues related to admission and commercialisation of the campus. This includes the move to increase the price of the JNU prospectus from Rs 120 to Rs 200,putting up of electricity meters in hostels and also the plan to rent out the Parthasarthy Rock open air theatre to private agencies.

The meeting held today evening discussed methods of protest in the future. Students discussed the prospect of going on a hunger strike or gheraoing a few blocks. We want to restore the identity and the spirit of JNU,where the poorest of the poor can take admission, Sandeep Singh,president of JNUSU.
