Jawaharlal Nehru University has suspended one of its senior professors working in the Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health on the charge of sexually harassing a female student.

The order, issued on Friday, comes five months after the student filed a complaint with the university’s Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) on November 1,2012.

According to the complaint, the professor began harassing her in March 2012.

The student said she had refrained from filing a complaint earlier because she felt nobody would believe her. It was after her family insisted and supported her that she approached the committee, she said in her complaint.

Students have been campaigning for the case for the past few months but said the professor was yet to be dismissed.

After the suspension order on Friday, students put up posters across the campus demanding prompt implementation of recommendations made by the GSCASH.

The committee has already submitted its inquiry report to the administration for further action.

A member of GSCASH confirmed the suspension saying the “order has been issued”. The member said further action will be decided upon by the university’s executive council and the suspension “will stay until further orders”.
