The JNU wing of the National Students’ Union of India has elected its first Kashmiri president. Ahjaz Ali Shah is a second-year Masters student at the Persian Centre and has been an NSUI member since his graduation days in Lucknow.
Shah grew up in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. His father is a retired court clerk and his mother is a homemaker.
His first preference, he said, is to strengthen the party’s presence in a Left-dominated campus. “The Left parties manage to remain active in the campus round the year. We will concentrate on increasing the party membership and focus on pertinent issues ,” he said.
He was chosen from among six candidates to be the NSUI-JNU unit president in the recently concluded party elections. Ahjaz has replaced former president Vikas Yadav at JNU.
