The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has issued notices to 20 students for the alleged “illegal confinement” of top university officials, including the vice-chancellor, inside the administrative block. “Twenty students, including Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and all four JNU students’ union (JNUSU) office-bearers, have been sent notices over the illegal confinement,” said a senior university official.
Students had “blockaded” the administrative building on October 19 for 20 hours. They had accused the administration of not doing enough to locate missing student Najeeb Ahmad, who had disappeared from campus on October 15. V-C Jagadesh Kumar had accused the students of lying about sending food and water to the building — a charge denied by the JNUSU.
The university had set up a proctorial enquiry on November 2. “The university Chief Proctor’s Office has received a complaint from the Chief Security Officer. A committee has been constituted,” stated the notice issued by the university.
Students have been asked to depose before the proctorial committee on December 8, failing which “it shall be presumed that you have nothing to say and appropriate action will be taken”.
