A week after a Jawaharlal Nehru University student attacked a classmate with an axe in a classroom,a case of molestation and harassment was reported from the universitys School of Language,Literature and Culture Studies on Sunday.
A BA first-year student at JNU alleged that she was molested, harassed and assaulted by her senior who reportedly forced her to be in a relationship with her.
The victim,in her complaint, stated that one Abhinandan Verma,a native of Bihar, allegedly forced her to be in a relationship with him and after she rejected his advances,he started to harass her and also threatened to kill her. The victim told the police that she had met the accused in April and the two were friends and being her senior,Verma used to help her with her studies. I wanted to be out of the relationship but he did not let me. He used to get very aggressive whenever I used to avoid him. He used to shout at me and get abusive in public. He never allowed me to meet my friends and other people, the victim stated in her written complaint to the police.
She further stated,He walked up to me and requested that he wants to talk to me for five minutes. First I hesitated but later agreed. When I went out,he started shouting at me and then slapped me in the campus. He then held me by my neck. He also tried to strangle me and choke me to death. I,however, raised an alarm. He has been constantly threatening to kill me, she stated.
Based on her complaint,an FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj police station and the accused was arrested. Verma, who completed his graduation, was reportedly preparing for his post-graduation and was illegally staying inside the campus.
Chief Proctor,JNU,P C Rath said,I did not personally receive any complaints as all cases of gender violence are first received by the gender sensitisation committee against sexual harassment (GSCASH). Although the matter is with the police,we will institute an inquiry into the incident at the university level as well.
