Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has officially constituted a grievance redressal cell to oversee its students’ union elections, paving the way for the polls to likely resume this November.
In a notification issued by the Dean of Students’ Office, the university announced that the panel—headed by Professor Manuradha Chaudhary and comprising ten faculty members and two student representatives—will serve as the “Court of Original Jurisdiction” for election-related disputes. The Vice-Chancellor will act as the appellate authority.
The cell has sweeping powers, including the authority to prosecute breaches of the election code, inspect candidates’ financial records, and issue writs of subpoena—orders compelling individuals to appear or present evidence. A sub-committee of observers will monitor polling across various schools and hostels.
According to an official circular, the elections are expected to take place “between six to eight weeks from the commencement of the academic session for PhD students,” which began on 12 September.
