Javelin impales 12-year-old as boys practise in school

Boy critical, services of physical training teacher of CR Park school terminated, probe ordered.

A 12-year-old boy was critically injured after being hit by a javelin in a school playground on Tuesday.

The incident, which highlights the perils of unsupervised training in schools, took place at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee government boys school in CR Park.

The javelin, thrown by a Class XII student preparing for the annual sports day, pierced Roshan Lama’s skull. He is on ventilator support at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. He has been admitted to the ICU of the Neurosurgery department.

The services of the school’s physical training (PT) teacher have been terminated.

Police said two Class XII students were practising without supervision of the school’s PT teacher and had taken the javelin without informing the school authorities. The state Education department has ordered a probe into the incident.

According to police, one of the students who was practising for the sports day had fled the city.

Police said Roshan and two friends Deepak and Bimal, all students of Class VI,were walking to their classroom during recess when Deepak saw the javelin coming towards them. Roshan too saw the incoming javelin and pushed Deepak out of harm’s way. The javelin missed his friend but hit Roshan’s ear and fractured his skull.

“We were walking towards our class when I saw the javelin coming towards me. I closed my eyes and froze there. Roshan pushed me away with one hand. With his other hand,he pushed Bimal away. But he couldn’t save himself. The javelin pierced his head,” Deepak, waiting outside the Trauma Centre and praying for his friend’s recovery, told Newsline.

He said he was alive only because of Roshan.

Deepak and Bimal immediately informed the school authorities, who rushed Roshan to the Trauma Centre.

DCP (Southeast) P Karunakaran said,“We are questioning the school’s principal and the PT teacher. In their statement, they said Roshan came in the way of the javelin when the students were practising. We are investigating the incident. The two senior students were practising for the sports day.”

“It’s a very unfortunate incident. We have ordered an inquiry into the incident. Since the PT teacher failed to fulfil his responsibility,we have terminated his services with immediate effect,” Amit Singla,Director,Education Department, said.

Roshan’s father Suraj Lama works as a driver. The family lives in Chirag Dilli. Relatives of the boy who were waiting outside the Trauma Centre said Roshan’s mother had passed away.

“We want police action against the teacher,” Shyamsen Tamang,a relative, said.

Suraj said he was praying for a miracle. “Doctors have said my son is very critical. I earn less than Rs 4,000 a month, still I send both my sons to school so that they are educated. I did not send him to school to get killed.”

The family hails from Janakpur in Nepal but has been living in Delhi for several years.
