A month after the Vivek Vihar police station in East Delhi received a case where a 35-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after strangling her six-year-old daughter, police have received the post-mortem report that indicates eight ante-mortem injuries.
Police have now expanded their scope of their investigations. The family members of the woman,Sangeeta Pokhriyal, have also meanwhile claimed that the it is a case of murder or abetment to suicide.
On August 9 morning, police had received a call, stating that Sangeeta had hanged herself after killing her daughter Vrinda at their Surajmal Vihar residence.
Sangeeta was married to a junior engineer with a gas pipeline company in Bharatpur,Rajasthan. The two had been married for nine years.
Her in-laws informed us that she had been depressed and had been undergoing treatment at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), said a police officer.
According to the post-mortem report,Sangeeta had injuries on her back, ankle, thigh and knee, appeared to have been blunt force trauma. Injuries on the back and the thigh appear to have been sustained two to three days prior to her death, the report stated.
Doctors who conducted the examination have categorically stated that the injuries do not appear as if they were self-inflicted.
We have consulted several forensic experts, all of whom have told us that the injuries don’t look as if they were self-inflicted. This is a case of abetment to suicide or that of murder, said Priyanka Thapliyal,Sangeeta’s cousin.
Investigations revealed that Sangeeta, who was working as a teacher at a primary school, was asked to quit her job. She then allegedly went into depression.
While initially Sangeeta’s family said it was suicide, they have now stated that it seems to be a case of abetment to suicide or murder. A case of murder was registered on the day of the incident. Based on preliminary investigations,it appears that Sangeeta had suicidal tendencies, which cannot be ruled out, said the officer.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Prabhakar said,We are investigating the case from all possible angles.
