A day after all IndiGo flights departing from Delhi were cancelled, leaving hundreds of passengers helpless and frustrated, scenes at the Delhi Airport were less chaotic on Saturday morning. But there were still a few passengers with their eyes glued to the screen, hoping they did not show ‘cancelled’ in red capital letters.
The airline cancelled over 400 flights from four major airports on Saturday, a day after managing to temporarily secure major relaxations in the second phase of the court-mandated new flight duty and rest period norms for the cockpit crew, sources said.
The number of cancellations at Delhi airport stood at 106, including 54 departures and 52 arrivals, sources said.
The Delhi Airport Authority, on its X handle, posted an advisory for travellers at 10.15 am saying that while flight operations are now ‘steadily resuming and getting back to normalcy,’ some IndiGo flights continue to be affected and that passengers are advised to check the latest flight status with the airline before arriving at the airport.
Official sources of the authority said the situation has been much better at the airport since Saturday morning. “Things are better than yesterday as planned cancellations have been announced well in advance, so those whose flights have been cancelled have not come to the airport. Those with cancelled flights who did reach the airport are not being allowed to enter the terminal.. inside the Terminal too, it is less chaotic now,” the official said.
He added that large response teams as well as medical teams and medical officers have been deployed. “We are distributing tea, coffee, and assisting the passengers.”
On Friday — the worst day of the crisis — airfares had skyrocketed and trains showed long waiting lists for reservations as passengers scrambled to arrange an alternative means of travel.
