Independence Day: Centre announces 1,037 police service medals

Of the 208 gallantry awards, 52 have gone to the personnel deployed in the Left wing extremism-affected areas, and 31 to those in the Jammu and Kashmir region.

The Central Government on Wednesday announced 1,037 service medals for the personnel of Central and state police forces, including 208 medals for gallantry, on the eve of Independence Day. Of the gallantry awards, 52 have gone to the personnel deployed in the Left wing extremism-affected areas, 31 to those in the Jammu and Kashmir region. Besides, 17 personnel each from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have also been selected for the gallantry awards.

The Union Home Ministry on Wednesday morning published the list of names of personnel chosen for the Medal for Gallantry, President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, Police Medal for Meritorious Service and President’s Medal for Gallantry.

“Out of 213 Medal for Gallantry (GM), 208 GM have been awarded to Police Personnel, 31 personnel from J&K Police, 17 personnel each from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, 15 personnel from Chhattisgarh, 12 from Madhya Pradesh, seven personnel each from Jharkhand, Punjab and Telangana,” a Home Ministry spokesperson said.

Three GM and one GM have been awarded to Delhi, Jharkhand Fire Service personnel respectively and one GM has been awarded to Uttar Pradesh Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence.

“52 personnel from CRPF, 14 personnel from SSB, 10 personnel from CISF, six personnel from BSF and the remaining police personnel from the other States/UTs and CAPFs,” the spokesperson said.

The Police Medal for Gallantry is awarded for “conspicuous gallantry in saving life and property, or in preventing crime or arresting criminals”. The President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded for a “special distinguished record in police service” and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service is awarded for “valuable service characterised by resource and devotion to duty”.
