Haryanas minister of tourism,Kiran Choudhary, was given the best tourism minister award by the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association at a ceremony held at The Ashok in the city on Friday. Also present at the gathering were Orissa Governor Murlidhar Bhandare and Sikkim tourism minister Bhim Dhungel.
Receiving the award,Choudhary said she was humbled by the honour and also announced plans that were being implemented to boost Haryanas tourism potential. These included the restoration of the Pinjore Fort and making Kurukshetra a must-visit tourist destination with great historical relevance.
The Haryana government has also been inviting investment for development of places in Haryana as weekend getaways. Our greatest asset is the proximity to Delhi, she said. We want to exploit this to make Haryana a destination for short getaways.
Choudhary also announced the launch of The Great Gurgaon Shopping Festival, which will begin from September 27 this year and go on till mid-October.
We hope this will be a bigger event than the Dubai Shopping Festival. It will serve as a precursor to a similar event held at the time of the Commonwealth Games, she said.
As the Tourism minister of Haryana,Choudhary said she had faced greater hurdles than her counterparts in other states. Unfortunately,Haryana is not blessed with the natural beauty that draws tourists, unlike other parts in the country. She also blamed the global meltdown for the lesser-than-expected results. All that we envisaged has not happened. Haryana, and India, has everything that a tourist can ask for.
