As many as 1,387 inmates lodged at the three Delhi prisons – Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini – will be awarded remission, or reduction in sentence, based on good conduct and behaviour inside the jail, the Delhi Prisons Department said Wednesday.

The move, announced on Independence Day, is part of the department’s efforts towards decongesting overcrowded jails in the capital. Earlier this year, the department had announced that it would start granting remission to inmates from the time they land in prison as undertrials.

According to the prison department, each convict will get at least 15 to 25 days of remission from their overall sentence.

“We pick prisoners who have served a long sentence and haven’t been involved in any criminal activity inside the jail. These are usually inmates who are aged or have been involved in only a single case. It’s a great administrative effort to decrease their sentence,” said an officer.

Officers said they also help the convicts get jobs, gain skills, or secure education from inside the prison.

The department has also recommended five convicts for remission of the entire jail term. “However, the power of taking out the jail term does not rest with the department. The recommendation slip will be passed on to courts and further authorities who will decide the remission and its terms. The five convicts chosen for this are the ones who have actively been working from jails and are on good conduct. Also, their jail sentences will end in one-three years. So, not a lot of years have been reduced…,” said an officer.
