Fifty-five-year-old Kuluga Gogoi had come to Delhi two months ago for his son’s kidney transplant. He was cheated of all his savings last Sunday,when two men allegedly exchanged his ATM card on the pretext of helping him withdraw money.
According to police,Gogoi had gone to an ATM of Union Bank of India to withdraw money when the incident took place. “On February 17,I took my SBI debit card to the ATM because I needed money to buy my son’s medicines and pay hospital fees. However,some problem occurred and despite repeated attempts,I could not withdraw money,” Gogoi told Newsline.
Then,two young men standing nearby entered the ATM and offered to help him. They took his card and asked for the PIN. “They withdrew Rs 10,000 and returned the debit card,” he said.
The fraud,however,was reported when Gogoi went to the ATM again a week later. The machine did not accept his PIN. He then went to the nearest SBI branch,where officials informed him that the ATM card had been exchanged.
In the FIR registered in the case,Gogoi reportedly told police: “I went to the SBI ATM inside AIIMS complex to withdraw money to pay for a few tests. But when the machine did not accept the password,I went to the bank. There,I was told that all my savings had been withdrawn and only Rs 45 remained.”
“We are simple people from a small village in Assam and whatever I had earned during my life is gone now. My son is in the hospital and this is when we need the money. I hope police nab the culprits soon,” Gogoi said.
Gogoi reportedly came to Delhi from Assam in December for his son’s kidney transplant after doctors in Assam referred him to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi. He was staying here in a rented accommodation in Yusuf Sarai.
A case of cheating has been registered at the Safdarjung Enclave police station in South Delhi.
