Fog,impending flight delays and commissioning of the new runway at the IGI Airport created much noise in the Parliament on Tuesday. Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel had to field several queries regarding passenger inconvenience at the Delhi airport. The minister agreed that the ongoing construction and renovation work at the airport, undertaken by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL),has affected passenger movement.

“Sometimes due to the ongoing air and city-side modernisation or renovation works, which are of temporary nature, and also on account of thorough security checks, the smooth movement of passengers and vehicles gets affected,” Patel told the Parliament. While there are reports that the new runway has led to an increase in taxiing time for fliers,Patel said there is no effect on taxiing time for international arrival flights with the opening of the new runway 29/11.

“Taxiing time for domestic flights has increased by 7-10 minutes but the hovering time of these flights has reduced significantly, which has saved time as well as fuel for the airlines,” he said. “Runway 29/11 is equipped with CAT-IIIB Instrument Landing System, which can facilitate aircraft landing and takeoff up to a runway visual range of 50 metres during foggy weather.”

He also said measures like installation of noise sensors have been put in place by DIAL in the vicinity of the airport to study noise pollution levels.
