Three hours prior to the sentencing, lawyers representing the convicts were seen pacing the court corridors wondering about the fate that awaited their clients.
A P Singh, the counsel for convicts Vinay and Akshay, reached the court at 11 am. Commenting that the media had already sentenced his clients to death,he said,The sentence in the case has already been decided. No one bothers about the irregularities in the investigation.
After the convicts were sentenced to death,A P Singh scoffed at comments that the verdict would act as a deterrent. If after this verdict, there are no rapes in the next two months,I shall not file an appeal in the High Court, he said.
V K Anand, the lawyer representing convict Mukesh, was hopeful that his client would be granted leniency by the court before the sentence was handed out.
There is hope for Mukesh. he only drove the bus. He was the only one who admitted that he was in the bus during the incident. He helped the prosecutions case by stating that all the five accused were present on the bus. The court should show him some leniency, he said. The sentence took him by surprise. I respect the courts order…but there has been an error in the application of law. I shall take this matter to the High Court, he said.
Vivek Sharma, the lawyer representing convict Pawan, was absent on Friday. Speaking on Sharmas behalf, his junior Sadashiv Gupta said,Even if the case was rarest of rare, death penalty was not the only option. We feel that the punishment was not appropriate.
The prosecution team,on the other hand, were congratulated by the media and the public for a job well done.
Special public prosecutor in the case Dayan Krishnan said,I have prosecuted bomb blast cases and several other serious crimes. But this was the most gruesome.
I am satisfied with the courts order. I feel proud to have contributed to swift justice in the case, public prosecutor A T Ansari said.
