Apart from bringing traffic to a grinding halt, the recent toll hike on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway has triggered off a war of words between the agency concerned and the Traffic department.
Traffic Police say that according to the rules, vehicle have to be let through the toll gate within a specific period of time. If that does not happen, the motorist can pass without paying the toll.
If there is no way out,we will have to bring this rule into effect and force the opening of separate lanes, Bharti Arora,DCP (Traffic),told Newsline. However,no communication has been made to the company in this regard so far,she added.
Traffic on the expressway became a nightmare owing to the increase in toll from Rs 20 to Rs 21 for private vehicles starting April 1.
While the traffic jam stretched for 2.5 kilometres, till IIFCO Chowk, the matter was no different for those coming from the other side. As many drivers did not know of the toll hike, they did not have the required change.
Senior officials of concessionaire,DS Constructions, maintained that the toll gates are doing a higher number than the minimum requirement according to rules.
While the rules say that 120 vehicles have to pass through the cash line in one hour, and 250 through the tag line,we are doing something around 450 vehicles through the cash line in a hour and more than 650 vehicles through the tag line. They cannot force us to open the toll gates, an official said.
Meanwhile, despite the extra provisions put in place by DS Constructions on Saturday, the situation remained grim. According to officials,60 additional personnel were deployed to help the existing staff of 280 to handle the change. Besides this, two tag only lanes were created on the extreme left (Delhi to Jaipur) to facilitate commuters traveling to Udyog Vihar, and 10 more staffers were added to the earlier team of 26 to screen vehicles.
