ROHINI 38-yr-old woman was found dead at home, family says relationship with husband strained

Two days after a 38-year-old school teacher was found murdered at her residence in Rohini,Outer Delhi, several police teams were sent out of Delhi to look for the prime suspect — the teacher’s husband,Hemant Chaturvedi — on Wednesday.

Police said Kaumudi Chaturvedi was first hit on the head with a blunt object and then her throat slit. Blood splatter found in the room, police said, suggested that Kaumudi had fought back.

Kaumudi’s brother Vipul Nautiyal told Newsline that her relationship with Hemant was strained. He said Hemant abandoned Kaumudi and their son within two years of the marriage. After this,Kaumudi moved to her parents’ home in Gulabi Bagh.

Nautiyal alleged that Hemant often forced Kaumudi to arrange for money. “On the second day of their marriage,Hemant asked Kamaudi for money. Since then,Hemant asked for money several times,” he said.

After a few years,Nautiyal said,Kamaudi shifted to a rented accommodation in Rohini. She also filed a dowry harassment case against Hemant and a divorce application.

“Her life was going well, till she agreed to court’s suggestion to give her relationship with Hemant another chance. The court suggested that before they take the final call on their divorce they should reconsider their relationship and move in together. She agreed and they were living together for the past four months,” Nautiyal said.

He said during the four months of living together,Kamaudi did not complain about any harassment or abuse against Hemant.

On Monday, when Kamaudi’s son returned home after his tuition classes,he found a new lock on the door. The boy called his mother on her cellphone, and when he did not get a response he went to their neighbour’s house,a senior police officer said. The child also tried to reach his father on the cellphone, but failed, police said.

“The killer locked the gate from outside with a new lock and fled,” the officer said. “The body of the woman was found in a pool of blood on her bed. She was wrapped in a blanket. The room was in a mess, suggesting there was a struggle,” the officer said.

Police will question the relatives of the couple. Hemant’s mobile has been put on surveillance. “We have already questioned a couple of people in the case. We need to find out who the accused spoke to before he switched off his phone,” police said.

After the post-mortem examination on Tuesday,Kaumudi’s body was cremated.
