Hunt for women who brought help to capital

Mother on way, cops wait for her to join dots.

A day after 40-year-old Vandana Dhir, the Country Communications Director for Alstom India and South Asia, was arrested on the charge of torturing her 16-year-old domestic help at her flat in Vasant Kunj, police are on the lookout for three women who brought the girl to Delhi three years ago.

While police maintain the girl is aged between 18 and 20 years,a bone ossification test will be done on Thursday to ascertain her age. The victim’s mother is slated to arrive on Thursday from Jharkhand.

Police have,so far, recovered a slip of a placement agency in Kotla Mubarakpur, which allegedly got the girl employed at Vandana’s house. But police have neither been able to trace the agency’s office nor a woman named Dorothy, whose name the rescued girl disclosed to police.

Police said three years ago,the girl was brought to Delhi by a woman she referred to as “bua”. The bua paid her mother, who lives in Jharkhand,Rs 5,000,promising her daughter employment in Delhi.

In Delhi, she was handed over to another woman, who took her to the placement agency owned by Dorothy. The girl worked at Noida and Lajpat Nagar before being employed at Vandana’s house in June this year. Dorothy allegedly handed over the girl to Vandana in South Extension, police said, adding that Vandana reportedly gave her Rs 30,000 as commission.

Vandana has given a mobile phone number to police she claims belongs to Dorothy. Police said the phone was switched off but they were investigating.

Police said the girl was promised a monthly salary of Rs 4,500 but was never paid the money.

Police said Vandana told them that a year-and-half ago, another help used to work at her house but left one fine day. Police are probing if the other help too was allegedly tortured by her.

On Monday night,NGO Shakti Vahini and a team of the Delhi Commission for Women and the Delhi Police raided flat number 1178,pocket B and C,in Sector A,Vasant Kunj, and rescued the help. The help has scars all over her body and a three-inch deep wound on her head. The girl has alleged Vandana had been torturing her for the past four months since she began working at her residence. The help has alleged Vandana tortured her with knives and sticks, and used to hit her with hot tongs.

During questioning, police said Vandana denied torturing the help and claimed the injuries on her body were sustained when she accidentally fell in the bathroom and hit herself against the girders under the wash basin.

She told police the girl was mentally unsound and that she employed her on humanitarian grounds. Police said Vandana kept the girl naked in the house most of the time and told police she did so because she was instructed by a doctor to leave the wounds open as the puss had not dried up.
