In An incident involving a celebration of a gang member’s release due to Covid-induced parole, a bullet-riddled body in a Mehrauli jungle and blood stains on a slab — Delhi Police was dealing with an open-and-shut case. However, a mapping of the forest through a drone led police to discover another body with bullet injuries, making it a double murder case.

Police had received a call on July 15, 2020, stating that a man with gunshot injuries was lying near Freedom Fighter Colony. The then DCP (South), Atul Kumar Thakur, had said teams rushed to the spot and found that the man, identified as Abdul Ali, had been shifted to AIIMS and declared dead on arrival.

During the area’s inspection, police had found the deceased’s phone, which was blood-soaked, and blood stains on the slab of a nullah near which the body was found. Police also found empty bottles of liquor and cigarettes. A senior officer handling the case at the time, said, “It was a blind case and CCTV footage was analysed. It was found that a total of six persons had come, including the deceased, and held a party there, following which a scuffle took place, and Ali was shot.”

Police identified several persons and arrested two men, identified as Vipin Balyan and Satender. “However, since blood stains were seen leading inside the forest, a drone was used to scan and analyse the area and another body with gunshot injuries was discovered. The accused later revealed that they had shot two persons, Ali and Sanjay,” said an officer.

“Prima facie, it came to the fore that a scuffle broke out between the deceased and the other gang members as the duo had allegedly deposed before a court as witnesses in a case against the gang leader. The other members held a grudge against them and planned to kill them on pretext of a celebration,” said the officer.
