Two paintings of a pink-coloured Mahatma Gandhi covered in rhinestones fight for attention with psychedelic images of Marilyn Monroe,Paul Newman and Micheal Jackson by American painter Oliver Domin, popularly known as OLLL,at the atria of DFL Emporio. Two original works by British superstar artist Damien Hirst hog the limelight while in a corner are Salvador Dalí’s Voltaire Lithograph.
Titled Fun,Hirst’s work grabs the attention of Ramola Bachchan, one of the first visitors to the exhibition hosted by Marigold Fine Art,an art house run by the brothers Gaurav and Vikram Assomull, the young collector-dealers behind this hip-and-happening exhibition of big international names. The exhibition began on February 1 and ends today. It will then travel to Mumbai.
The Hirst consists of a melange of pills, butterflies and a syringe filled with blood that sends a shiver down the spine of the viewer. To offset this slightly macabre arrangement is a sculpture of bright butterflies by the Boston-based David Kracov. However, the classic pieces are a collection of limited edition sculptures of Auguste Rodin including The Thinker and The Kiss.
“Why did we have an exhibition in a mall? Well,we wanted to have the maximum number of footfalls and widen our buyer base,” says Gaurav. As if to prove him right,a father and son stroll up to the works after shopping in the mall. They predictably like the butterflies. A group of young Iranian students,on the other hand, goes into raptures over the Rodins. “We have already sold five works on the opening night and that augurs well for this exhibition,” says Vikram. The works begin from Rs 1 lakh and go up to Rs 80 lakh, the bronze sculptures by Rodin being the most expensive.
