The police claimed on Monday that they had solved the murder of an elderly chartered accountant in East Delhi by arresting the family’s help from his village in Jharkand.

The police said Surjit Singh Munda (19) murdered Yashpal Soli (67) and injured his wife,Sudha (60),along with two associates on July 5. They claim Munda has confessed to planning the robbery with Kumar Thapa and Shyam Thapa, whom he met in Tihar Jail. Both are Nepali nationals and live in a rented jhuggi in Delhi. “We are conducting raids but the two are still absconding with the money,” Anand Mohan,DCP (East Delhi),said.

The police had found Soli lying dead in his study, while Sudha was found unconscious, her arms tied with a chunni,in the bedroom. There were no external injuries on Soli’s body and the police thought he had been smothered to death. Their house had been ransacked and their car was also missing.

The police found that Munda was missing and they began to suspect his involvement when they checked his background.

The family had found Munda through an agency in Kalkaji. On checking his records, the police found he had been arrested once for stealing jewellery worth Rs 14 lakh from an earlier employer.

A police team was sent out to trace him and police personnel got to know from his friends that he had left for his native village. The police went there and arrested him. They, however, recovered only Rs 25,000 and a gold chain from Munda’s house.

Munda had worked at the Soli residence for two years, from 2001 to 2003,as a domestic help, and was again hired by Soli about four to five days before the incident occurred. In the middle,he also worked at the house of Soli’s daughter in Gurgaon.
