Heavy metal band,Orphaned Land,ate,slept and dreamt Metallica for more than 20 years. And in May 2010,they performed the opening act for Metallicas concert in Israel. On Tuesday night,the Israeli band shook up the quiet neighbourhood of Chanakyapuri in the Capital. After a rockstar-like delay of more than an hour,the band opened their performance with an English-Arabic number,which had the headbanging crowd roar in delight.
Discussing their ideology,lead vocalist Kobi Farhi said,An artiste’s job is to reflect the reality of his environment,and thats what we are trying to do. We want to give a glimpse of life in the Middle East and present its culture,conflict,religion and landscape through our performance.
Aashish Mandhwani,a fan who came all the way from Bengaluru to hear Orphaned Land,said,It was during the Opeth show at the Summer Storm Festival in Bangalore that the bands upcoming Delhi performance was announced. I am a big follower of this band because I like the way they infuse Middle Eastern music with heavy metal, he said.
The five-member band,which categorises itself as Oriental metal,sings in four languages English,Hebrew,Arabic and Yemeni Arabic. Earlier this week,they also performed in Guwahati. Formed in 1991,Orphaned Land has become one of the leading names on the Eastern heavy metal scene,and has performed all over the world including at the heavy metal music fests such as Wacken Open Air (Germany) and Gods of Metal (Italy).
