Police said 29-year-old Neetu Dabodha, who was involved in several cases of murder, extortion and robbery in Delhi and Haryana, ran an extortion racket even when he was lodged in Bhondsi Jail.

He and his associate Sandeep Chitania escaped from Haryana police custody in April 2012,while they were being taken back to jail after being produced in a Saket court.

He had been on the run and police had announced a reward of Rs 7 lakh for information leading to his arrest.

According to police,Dabodha did not use mobile phones and communicated with associates via handwritten notes. He dropped out of school after Class X and began working as a taxi conductor.

Dabodha,Chitania and Alok Gupta were also involved in the murder of head constable Ram Kishen in November,2012,police claimed.

Police said Kishen was on duty at a police picket, when he flagged down Dabodha’s car. Instead of stopping the car, police claimed Dabodha shot at Kishen, who succumbed to injuries.

In February,Dabodha and an associate were wounded in an encounter after the Special Cell tracked them down. But they managed to escape.

Dabodha, sources said, always carried road maps. He would never board a train or a plane because he feared that he would be tracked down. He was said to be a follower of a peer baba in Bahadurgarh and would visit a Devi temple every Monday and Thursday.

One of his associates arrested by the Special Cell had disclosed that Dabodha regularly consulted an astrologer in his home town. This astrologer, police claimed, had assured him that he wouldn’t die of a bullet.
