A 22-year-old man died and two others were injured when an iron pillar fell on them at the site of an under-construction foot overbridge in Northwest Delhi on Sunday evening. The injured persons were discharged after first-aid at the Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital.
The incident occurred around 6 pm at an under-construction foot overbridge near Keval Park MCD colony in Adarsh Nagar area of Northwest Delhi. According to police,a crane was lifting a heavy metal pillar when its cable broke.
The iron cable of the crane,which was being used to lift the heavy metal cable,suddenly broke and the pillar fell on the workers. A case of causing death by negligence under Section 304 (A) has been registered at the Adarsh Nagar police station. We are trying to identify the contractor, said DCP (Northwest) Meenu Chowdhary.
The bridge was being constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD) on the Azadpur-Mukundpur road. The crane driver,who has gone absconding,is yet to be identified.
The PWD project had been under construction for the last seven months,ever since tenders were floated in July 2011. Identifying the victim as Feroze Khan,co-workers said that he sustained severe head injuries in the incident. His colleagues,Shahnawaz (22) and Waqil (20),sustained minor injuries. They were rushed to the hospital in an autorickshaw,where Khan was declared dead on arrival. All the three hailed from Panchsheel Nagar district near Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.
Sheshnag (41),a welder,told Newsline that the three workers were part of a group that had come to Delhi from Meerut that very morning. I met Feroze for the first time today. We came to Anand Vihar ISBT by bus,then caught a Metro till here. He was a good-natured young boy,unmarried. Who could have expected this?
