A personal security officer (PSO) working at a liquor store in Gurgaon was arrested Tuesday for allegedly absconding with cash worth Rs 50 lakh entrusted to him by his employer, police said.
The accused has been identified as Jai Pratap Singh, a resident of Belhar village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district. Police have recovered cash worth Rs 49.5 lakh and the vehicle used in the crime, from his possession.
According to the police, the incident happened on December 10 when the employer of Discovery liquor store tasked Singh with delivering the money to a person in Delhi.
Singh, employed at the store for the past 10 years, left its Sector 57 office in a Maruti Suzuki S-Presso car around 12:30 pm, but did not reach the given destination. By evening, his phone had been switched off, prompting the employer to lodge a complaint at Sector-56 police station, leading to the registration of a case.
A team from the Sector 43 Crime Branch, led by Inspector Narendra Kumar Sharma, subsequently tracked and arrested Singh from Sector 56 in Gurgaon.
“During questioning, Singh said he headed towards Delhi, switched off his phone, parked the car in an MCD parking lot near Batra Hospital, hid the cash in the boot, and travelled to Haridwar and Rishikesh for leisure. He destroyed his mobile phone there and spent Rs 50,000 on the trip. Singh revealed he wanted to invest in a fruit orchard in Himachal Pradesh,” crime branch officials said.
Acting at his instance, police recovered the Maruti S-Presso and the rest of the cash from the parking lot.
Singh was produced in a court on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is currently underway, police said.
