A day after a 32-year-old woman fell to her death from the gallery outside the eighth floor apartment where she lived with her family, and her father registered a case of murder against her husband, police have arrested him in connection with the incident.
“We arrested the accused last night. He was produced in court on Monday and taken into a two-day police remand. He insists it was suicide, but we are are questioning him further,” said sub-inspector Vinay, the IO of the case.
The incident took place around 9 pm Saturday, when residents and security personnel at Valley View Estate heard a loud thud and found Deepika Chouhan lying in a pool of blood. She was rushed to a hospital, but died on Sunday.
Her father — who lives in Chandigarh — filed a case against her husband, Vikram Chouhan, alleging that he was having an affair with a woman and had murdered his wife. Police said the woman is likely to be called for questioning in the coming days.
Police sources said the accused has admitted that he and his wife were having frequent fights on various issues.
“He claimed that they got into a fight on Karva Chauth as well, and she jumped off the gallery. He claimed that he ran to stop her,” said a police source.
The couple have two children and had been married for six years.
Police said Deepika worked at a private sector bank, while her husband works for a private firm. “The post-mortem has been conducted and the body handed over to her family, which has finished her last rites,” said the IO.
Dr Deepak Mathur, who conducted the autopsy, said, “We found multiple injuries and fractures on her body, which are consistent with a fall from a great height. She died due to excessive bleeding.”
