The bullet-ridden body of a 28-year-old real estate employee was found inside his car in Gurgaon late on Monday night.

Deceased Pravin Chawla’s father Gulshan Chawla reportedly told the police that his son could be the victim of an attempted abduction. Chawla was found dead in the backseat of his car,which was parked in an isolated spot outside the IFFCO Tower.

Chawla,an assistant manager with global realtors Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj,had called his father after work — around 7.30 pm on Monday — to tell him he would be back home by 9. The family lived in Sector 5.

Police sources said that Chawla left office at the Global Business Park much later,around 9.30 pm.

When Chawla did not return till late,his father began calling friends. A friend of his in Najafgarh also got a frantic call from the family. This friend,who did not wish to be named,said,“I have known Pravin for six years. We met often. However,when I last spoke to him a day before Ram Navami,Pravin sounded very keen to visit Vaishno Devi. He insisted that I accompany him. I didn’t get leave from my office,and Pravin did not go either.”

Police officers said Chawla’s father next called his son,a little before 11 pm. Someone answered the call and asked for Rs 50 lakh as ransom to release his son,Gulshan Chawla told officers. He then called the police.

Separate police teams immediately fanned out to look for Chawla,investigating officer Jagdish Prasad of the Sector 29 police station said. “His car was spotted opposite IFFCO Tower around 1.30 am. The body was in the rear seat. Chawla had been shot with a .9 mm pistol and a towel was wrapped around his neck. There were bloodstains on the front co-passenger’s seat as well,” the investigating officer said.


The postmortem report confirmed Chawla had died of bullet injuries. He was shot four times,in each shoulder,in his neck and chest,the police said. An officer added: “We could not find the car keys,and his mobile. All other valuables were untouched.”

The police have registered a case at the Sector 29 police station under Sections 364 A and 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Chawla had also called a friend after he was allegedly kidnapped. He told her the abductors were taking him to Behror in Rajasthan,sources said. The phone then went off.


His friend immediately informed the family about the call,and also said she had heard a gunshot just before the phone was disconnected.

Chawla’s company released an official statement later. It read: “We are deeply concerned by what has happened. The matter is at present with the Haryana police and until investigations are concluded,we are not in a position to comment further.” Chawla had worked with the firm for a little over two years,a spokesperson said.
