After receiving several complaints about unclean and unhygienic bed linen, so far only in white, both civil hospitals in Gurgaon will soon introduce sheets in other colours. What’s more, the bed sheets will be changed every day under a weekly colour scheme. However, it will not mean off with the whites.

The additional secretary of the health department recommended introducing linen in other colours after a visit to one of the two civil hospitals last week, said sources. The colours in consideration are blue, green and light pink, added the sources.

According to the plan, the Director General, Health Services, will decide the colour for each day. The information will be on display at the hospitals.

“This will be implemented in both government hospitals in the city. Even though our linen are regularly cleaned, keeping in mind the overall infection-free environment in the hospital, this step will help us differentiate between used and fresh linen,” said Dr Ramesh Dhankar, Chief Medical Officer, Gurgaon, Monday.

Health department officials said it would take about a month before the colour scheme is implemented, as planning is being done ahead of initiating the procurement process.

Kanta Goel, Principal Medical Officer, said, “We will hold a meeting with the workers and the hospital staff including doctors on March 21 and then decide how to go about it.”

The hospitals do not intend to discard nearly 500 white bed sheets they use. The civil hospital near Sadar Bazaar has 200 beds, while the one in sector 10 has 100. “We will not be wasting our white regular bed sheets. Whatever the colour scheme may be, we will include the white sheets twice a week, most likely on Thursdays and Saturdays,” said Goel.

The hospitals have in-house laundry facilities for cleaning bed sheets. Told about the colour scheme being planned, a worker at one of the hospitals said, “Senior officials maintain that sheets are washed every day, but that is not always true. This step will help.”
