Two days after a 58-year-old businessman was killed after being hit by a speeding Hyundai Santro in Gurgaon DLF Phase-2 while he was cycling, a 20-year-old driver who did not have a licence and a 40-year-old owner of the car were on Friday arrested in connection with the case, police said.
The victim, Amitabh Jain, a resident of DLF Phase-2, was cycling near Akashneem Marg at the time of the incident on Wednesday. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries later.
Acting on a written complaint filed by Jain’s cousin, an FIR was registered at the DLF Phase-2 police station. “During investigation, it was established that Sahil (20), who hails from Jharkhand’s Tatanagar and currently resides in Faridabad’s SGM Nagar, was driving the Santro car at a high speed. He lost the control of the vehicle and rammed into the cyclist from behind. Sahil works as a helper at a private club in Gurgaon and was returning from duty at the time of the incident,” a police spokesperson said.
He possessed no valid driving licence, officials said, adding that the vehicle was not insured. “Despite being aware that he had no legal authority to drive, Sahil continued to operate the car. The registered owner of the Santro, Gagandeep Nagar (40), a resident of Nawada in Faridabad, has also been arrested for allowing a person, who did not have a licence, to drive his vehicle.”
The offending vehicle has been seized. Both the accused were produced before a local court on Friday and sent to judicial custody, police said. An investigation is underway, they added.
“The accused and the victim did not know each other,” Station House Officer (DLF Phase-2 ) Manoj Kumar said.
Jain is survived by his wife Ritu Jain, who works at the Parliament Museum in Delhi; a 29-year-old son working at an IT company in London; and a 25-year-old daughter who lives in Bengaluru. After he received the news of his father’s death, Jain’s son rushed to Gurgaon.
Jain had celebrated his 58th birthday on October 17. He and his wife were married for over 30 years.
The family said that he earlier ran a departmental store in Delhi’s Malka Ganj, and a security and maintenance business.
