Out of the 304 CBSE schools surveyed by the Board across the country,265 have been ranked below par on sanitation levels.
The schools have either been rated black or red,with the latter implying below 33 per cent adherence to norms. The first-round survey has called the performance of such schools grim.
Among those in the red on sanitation levels are popular Delhi schools like Tagore International School (East of Kailash),The Air Force School,Ahlcon International School,Amity International School (Saket),Bal Bharati Public School. Also on the list are HRD Minister Kapil Sibals alma mater St Johns School in Chandigarh,Bhavan Vidyalaya in Panchkula,Delhi Public School in Noida and Gurgaon and Podar International School in Pune.
They share the stage with a whole bunch of Kendriya Vidyalayas,a number of DPS schools and Army schools.
More startling is the fact that only four out of 304 schools were rated green for excellent sanitation situation. Another four are also close and were rated blue,while 31 are yellow for a fair performance.
All schools will now have to display their sanitation rating at the right corner of all their correspondence,in the form of a coloured circle. However,if the schools improve their sanitation levels,they are allowed to obtain a fresh certificate after a gap of four months.
It is definitely a cause for concern. In almost all meetings with schools,we have brought up the issue of sanitation how washrooms must be kept clean,waste must be segregated and teachers must use students washrooms at least once a week. After all CBSE schools have been rated through this online self-declaration system,we will verify these ratings and also reward the cleanest schools, CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi told Newsline.
The survey assessed a school on parameters such as washroom hygiene,water supply,water conservation,campus cleanliness,hygiene awareness and innovative methods towards maintaining hygiene.
The National Urban School Sanitation Initiative was launched in 2010 jointly by HRD and UD ministries,with actor Aamir Khan as brand ambassador.
