The Satte-Batte gang operated through a well-knit network of informers and planners. The gang had lawyers on its payroll and was helped by an official at AIIMS to get fake medical certificates, which facilitated the parole of gang members lodged in Tihar.
One of the members carried out a robbery when he was out on a parole. Kurbesh with Satte alias Satya Prakash and two other armed assailants robbed a bank in Samaipur Badli on November 17. They took the bank staff and customers hostage and made away with Rs 24 lakh.
Interestingly,on November 17,Kurbesh,who had been lodged in Tihar Jail in a robbery case, was out on parole. Investigators said some middle level officials in AIIMS had provided Kurbesh with fake medical certificates to facilitate his parole.
The police said the medical official has been identified and will be arrested soon. He also made fake medical certificates for druglord Sherafat Sheikh and other members of the gang to facilitate their paroles. A look at the gang:
Meeting place: Pool and snooker joints in Lajpat Nagar.
Logistics and legal support: The police officers said the gang had a considerable number of advocates on their payroll, who helped them with their cases and bails.
Vehicles for committing robbery: Provided by prominent autolifters, who met the gang members in Tihar Jail. The South Delhi police arrested an autolifter Suresh alias Raj on Thursday.
* Nadir: An Afghani national whose father runs a carpet shop in Lajpat Nagar. The police said his carpet showroom is worth Rs 60 crore. The father Zahir migrated to India five years ago and lives at 45,Masjid Lane,Bhogal in South Delhi. At a pool joint in Lajpat Nagar,he met accused Harpal Singh alias Honey and Kuldeep Singh alias Sonu, other informers of the gang. They lured him with big money if he provided them with information. The police officials said Nadir often helped his father with business and with time came in contact with businessmen. After a tiff with his father,he started providing information to the gang about the prominent businessmen he knew. He had been nudging the gang to kidnap his 11-year-old neighbour, but it never materialised.
* Harpal Singh and Kuldeep Singh: Cousins who live in South Extension. Kuldeeps father has meat shops in INA Market and Khan Market. They also met the gang members at pool hangouts in Lajpat Nagar. The cousins gambled and had to repay several lakhs. It was then that they started giving information to the gang.
Once they had the information,Satte and Bittu told druglord Sharafath Sheikh and Sattes brother Dabbu about it. They then planned the robbery. They sent out the informers to conduct recce of the spots and assigned prominent gangsters to conduct the operation.
Satte and Bittu had their separate gangs. They often sat together and decided on the members for a particular operation planned by Dabbu and Sheikh. They functioned separately earlier, but after the alliance of Sheikh and Dabbu, they started working together. Satte was always careful and carried two pistols in every operation he undertook.
