GPS,1,700 shelters for DTC buses: Lovely

All buses in the Capital will be equipped with global positioning systems by the end of this fiscal year

All buses in the Capital will be equipped with global positioning systems (GPS) by the end of this fiscal year and over 1,700 new bus shelters will be set up in the city in the next two months,Transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely today said in the Delhi Assembly. The government had identified 2,800 sites for new bus shelters,of which 1,703 are being set up in the first phase and the rest will come up in the second phase.

Transport minister said that the first phase which was to finish by April 31 has been delayed and will be completed in the month of May. So far, work on installation of over 1,000 such shelters has been completed.

Responding to questions,he said that action will be taken against contractors who won tenders for the first phase of the project but are yet to start work. He assured that a probe will be carried into allegations of old bus shelters being installed in some rural areas as well as the removal of bus stop near MCD Civic Centre. “We are also starting the first phase of a project by March 31 under which electronic boards will be set up on bus stops to give information to passengers about timing of the approaching buses,” he said.

“In the last five years,DTC had procured 3,775 new low-floor buses,of which 3,740 have been deployed and 35 more are expected to hit the roads soon. The conversion of buses by fitting CNG kits is a cheap option but such vehicles suffered some engine problems.”

Lovely also said work of installing GPS in buses, for which several deadlines have been missed, will be over by March 31. This will help the DTC streamline its functioning, including gathering data on the need to deploy buses on particular routes depending upon the number of passengers.
