Delhi businessman murder case: Key suspect gave police the slip — twice

This was the second time that the man, Golu alias Mukesh alias Sachin, had given police the slip.

Last month, the Delhi Police Special Cell managed to track down one of the two shooters in connection with the murder of a utensils businessman in Farsh Bazaar last December, in Ghaziabad. They nearly caught him — but he managed to escape after an exchange of fire, police sources claimed.

This was the second time that the man, Golu alias Mukesh alias Sachin, had given police the slip.

In February, sources said Golu was spotted in Northeast Delhi’s Jaffrabad but got away. “We had inputs about his presence, and several teams rushed to the location, but we were not able to find him. Then we scanned CCTV footage and saw a man with a helmet on a scooter. The physique… matched that of the suspect,” an officer had said at the time.

On May 30, the Special Cell gunned down Golu’s accomplice in the murder, a sharpshooter of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang named Naveen Kasana, in a shootout in Hapur.

Golu allegedly killed the businessman, Sunil Jain, after mistaking him for someone else.

According to a police officer, a tip-off was received that Golu would come to Lal Kuan in Ghaziabad around 10 pm on May 14. The informant, as per police, said Golu would be in a white WagonR. “Golu planned to go to Hapur to meet some associates. They were planning on executing a robbery in Delhi’s Shahdara,” the police officer said.

A team of the Special Cell’s New Delhi Range reached Lal Kuan and spotted the WagonR speeding on the road towards the Ghaziabad bus terminal. A chase ensued, and the police managed to intercept the car near Bhatia Mod. “The police personnel got out of their vehicle and asked Golu to surrender. But Golu drove his vehicle towards the policemen,” a police officer said.

One of the policemen then fired a shot at the WagonR’s tyre, but the bullet hit the rim of the tyre and Golu managed to escape, the officer said.

The police said Golu, a Class 4 dropout, has 11 cases against him. He first came under the police lens when he was booked in a molestation case.

The officer added, “He has been arrested thrice by the Special Cell and also by Welcome and Bhajanpura police stations in Northeast Delhi. As per his record, he falls in the ‘pick-pocketing’ category. He is involved in cases of house theft and attempted murder as well as cases lodged under the Arms Act, among others.”

Kasana (38), a resident of Ghaziabad, was shot dead by the Delhi Police Special Cell and Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF). A senior police officer said Kasana was spotted on a motorcycle in Hapur. Following this, a joint team of UP STF and Delhi Police Special Cell laid a trap and asked him to stop.

“Kasana opened fire at the police, and in retaliation, the team members also fired at him, injuring him. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” the officer said.

The police said over the past few months, they had raided several locations in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and other neighbouring states looking for the two shooters.

Sunil Jain, who owned a utensils business, was gunned down by Kasana and Golu in Farsh Bazar on December 8, 2024, when he was returning home from a morning walk at the Yamuna Sports Complex. The police probe showed Jain was killed as his physique was similar to that of the real target, and they shared similar routines.

After the murder, Kasana and Golu were harboured by Delhi Police Sub-Inspector Sukhbir. In February, police arrested the SI for allegedly harbouring and providing financial assistance to the assailants.
