A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide on Saturday morning by hanging herself with a plastic rope in her house in Trilokpuri, police said. She was distressed that she would not pass her Class XII board examination with high marks, her uncle said.
The girl was an Arts stream student at a government school in the area. She was preparing for her last paper scheduled for April 20.
Her uncle told police that she was under tremendous pressure as she was unable to finish her course.
He said she feared she would not be able to score well and would, therefore, not get admission in a good college. On Friday night, the girl was reportedly upset about not performing well in other subjects.
On early Saturday morning, after her brother left for work, she came out of her one-room house and locked it from outside. She then reportedly prepared a noose with a plastic rope and hanged herself from an iron hook in the verandah outside the house, police said.
She was spotted hanging by her aunt when she woke up around 7 am. The family made a PCR call and took her to the hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
“She did not leave any suicide note, but her uncle told us that she was under pressure due to her ongoing exams. Her uncle said she was ambitious and wanted to go to a good Delhi University college. Since her exams did not go very well, she feared scoring less than her classmates,” a senior police officer said.
The girl is survived by an elder sister, a younger brother and her mother. Her father passed away years ago and the family was residing with her aunt, uncle and their children in the one-bedroom house.
