The police on Sunday arrested a 40-year-old vendor of sweets for allegedly raping a minor girl four months ago. The girl’s parents lodged a complaint on Saturday night after they got to know that their daughter was pregnant.
She is said to be only 12 years old.
Police said the parents consulted members of an NGO which works with the police.
The parents, assisted by two counsellors from the NGO, approached North Delhi district police, where a case was registered under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and the appropriate sections of the Pocso Act.
Police said they tracked down the accused, identified as one Vinod from Bihar, to his house and arrested him Sunday afternoon. Vinod’s wife and children live back in the state. He had come to Delhi for work and was living in a rented house next to where the victim’s family lives.
The child’s mother, who works as a domestic help, was away at work when the accused found the girl alone in her house and lured her to his room.
He raped the child and warned her not to tell anyone. The girl never told her parents about the incident till the matter came to light when she complained of acute stomach ache a few days ago.
The parents took her to a doctor, who found that the girl was carrying a four-month-old foetus.
The traumatised child was counselled by an NGO and the Delhi Commission for Women. Police said she will be made to abort since the pregnancy would prove dangerous to her health and may even jeopardise her life.
