Ghaziabad: Inspector suspended for slapping woman

A senior inspector posted at the Sahibabad police station in Ghaziabad was suspended on Wednesday for allegedly slapping a woman in the police chowki late on Monday night.

Drama was witnessed in the Vikram Enclave area on Monday night after a woman was found in a “compromising position” with a man in a car by residents. Officers said when residents objected,the woman subjected them to verbal abuse,and assaulted them as well.

Later,when police officers were called to the spot,she reportedly assaulted a constable three times,and when she was taken to the chowki,she allegedly continued to abuse police officers.

Senior Inspector Iftikhar Qureshi reportedly slapped her. The entire sequence of events was filmed by TV channels.

A day after senior police officers said an inquiry on the role of police personnel was launched,they confirmed that Qureshi has been suspended.

“After investigations by officers of rank Deputy Superintendent of Police and above,a decision has been made to suspend Senior Inspector Qureshi. The role of other police personnel is also being examined,and footage is being studied,” a senior officer said.

On Tuesday,two cases were registered against the two accused,both of whom are from Delhi. While the first was registered by a resident of the area,and the second complainant was Qureshi himself.

The accused woman said police personnel misbehaved with her,and asked her how she “dared to drink with a man late at night”. She said the charges were fabricated.
