A 56-year-old gazetted officer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital on Thursday night.
According to police,Harpratap Singh was a deputy director-level officer in the Home Ministry and was admitted to RML on March 12,two days before the incident took place.
Singh was admitted to RML as he was suffering from acute hypertension and depression. His daughter left the ward to fetch water around 11 pm on Thursday. When she returned,Singh had allegedly hanged himself. She alerted hospital staff members. They brought the body down and informed police. When we reached at the spot,the body was on the bed, a senior police officer said.
No suicide note was recovered from near the body.
Post-mortem report will reveal the exact cause of death,police said. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination to Lady Hardinge hospital.
Dr H K Kar,Medical Superintendent of RML hospital,said: He was admitted to the medical ICU for a few hours and was later shifted to the private ward when he stabilised. He had a history of coronary artery disease and diabetes,and was under treatment for depression.
