They hurled stones at people attending marriage, ran over policemen chasing on bike
A Delhi police constable was crushed to death and a home guard volunteer injured after being run over by a gang of alleged robbers in a tempo. The cops,on a motorcycle, were chasing the tempo in Northwest Delhis Bharat Nagar area on Friday morning.
Police said the assailants first pelted stones at guests at a marriage ceremony after a scuffle and in a bid to escape, broke two barricades.
The gang broke through the barricade at Bharat Nagar ganda nullah and ran over Constable Naresh Verma.
Police said they were trying to find out why the gang had gone for the marriage ceremony and whether their motive was to conduct a robbery or whether the people at the marriage ceremony knew them.
According to police, the first PCR call was received at 1.55 am at the Subhash Place police station, alerting them of a gang in a tempo hurling stones at guests attending a marriage ceremony at the Subhash Baraat Ghar in Shakurpur area. A police team rushed to the spot and took the injured to a hospital close by.
However, within 15 minutes, the gang returned to the spot where they had entered into a scuffle earlier. Following another argument,a man raised an alarm and another PCR call was made. Subsequently, the PCR van patrolling the area spotted the assailants Tata 407 tempo.
Police said the gang had perhaps conducted a recce of the area around a month ago and hence was not expecting barricades at close intervals, which had been placed only 20 days ago.
So,when they tried to escape, they first ran into a barricade at JJ Colony in Wazirpur.
To avoid getting caught, they broke the barricade and fled, said a senior police officer. However, within seconds, cops sent an alert via wireless.
They (Constable Verma and home guard Shankar) immediately boarded their bullet and were waiting at Bharat Nagar police station. As soon as the tempo passed, the duo began chasing the gang. They signalled the gang, asking them to stop. When they did not,the duo tried getting ahead of the vehicle, but collided with the truck, said the officer.
Speaking to Newsline, home guard Shankar who suffered minor head injuries, said We were chasing the truck and before we knew it,the truck was parallel to us. They were driving in a zig-zag manner and swerved when they saw us. We lost balance and I fell on the left. Verma fell on the right and the tempo ran over his head. He was killed on the spot. The gang then broke the barricade and fled.
They escaped towards Sarai Rohilla, dragging a portion of the barricade for a few metres, said a senior police officer.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Meenu Chaudhry said,We have registered a case under Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) and are investigating the matter.
