The spacious store in Defence Colony is for those who want it all under one roof designer wear, jute bags, showpieces, vintage items and even a cup of coffee.
About 10 years ago, when Radhika Gupta opened Moonriver at MG Road,it was all about home furnishing and decorative items that she had collected during her travels around the world. Then about five years ago, there was a change in address and the store shifted to Defence Colony. As the brand completes a decade, the store bears a new philosophy and a fresh coat of paint, literally.
The two-storey spacious store, which is built like a house,is a paradise for those who want everything under one roof from showpieces, paintings, couches and cutlery to designer clothes, jewellery and shoes. Gupta follows the Spring-Summer and Autumn-Winter cycles and brings in new items accordingly. The store houses a balanced mix of traditional Indian influences,Chinese and Japanese artifacts and European artwork. Huge canvasses of Pichwai paintings, cushions with gota patti work by the artisans of the Jaipur royal family,Chinese cloissones made from enamel and even Afghan carpets the first floor is a labyrinth of collectibles. Our favourites are restored vintage radio sets and framed photographs from the sets of Mughal-e-Azam.
A flight of stairs leads to the fashion store on the second level that stocks brands such as Aneeth Arora,Eka,Abraham-Thakore and White Champa, among others. There were also a few off-white dresses and tops hanging at the counter, belonging to a brand called Banjanan by Carolyn Weller. These are jamdani saris with a contemporary twist a recommendatory style statement. Theres also a small room here ideal for those looking for Penguins Classics collection with designer covers. Gupta claims that Moonriver is the only store in India with access to these books.
And if one is tired of all the shopping, theres a hot cuppa at the in-house cafe that boasts shelves loaded with books. Visitors can also choose from racks full of woven bags and evelopes that Gupta has sourced from NGOs across India.
Surprsingly, the price bracket suits one and all as the items are priced between Rs 500 and Rs 5 lakh.
