In a first, over 12,000 Delhi Metro commuters enjoyed free rides on Friday while going to Old Delhi to hear Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first Independence Day speech and participate in celebrations.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said, “The total number of complementary coupons issued were 12,588. The five stations where maximum coupons were given away were Saket, Uttam Nagar East, Lajpat Nagar, Jahangirpuri and Hauz Khas,” a spokesperson said.
Also for the first time this year, DMRC played patriotic songs on the Metro stations and inside trains. “Keeping the mood of the nation in mind, we decided to play patriotic songs. Most were traditional songs like ‘mile sur mera tumhara’,” the spokesperson added.
However, commuters complained of low frequency.
“We began the services at 4.30 am, an hour before the usual time. But the trains ran at a frequency of 20 to 30 minutes. We received complaints about it, but it was all handled eventually,” an official said.
