Four men were arrested in connection with the daylight robbery and murder in Kamla Market on October 8.

An officer said Shamim Akhtar (23),Sadiq (21),Mohammad Uvesh (24) and Mohammad Salim (25) were arrested from a DDU park near IP Estate on Thursday and four pistols and ammunition were seized from them.

He said they were involved in the robbery and murder of 45-year-old vendor,Sultan.

“Sultan’s employer Shaqeel told us four to six men entered his handicraft shop near Zakir Husain College and frisked all the workers. They assaulted everyone and robbed mobile phones and Rs 8,000 in cash from them before fleeing,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Central) Devesh Srivastava said.

When they were fleeing,Sultan caught hold of one of the robbers. Another robber took out a pistol and shot at Sultan and Nawab Ali,who had rushed in after hearing the commotion.

They were taken to LN Hospital, where doctors declared Sultan dead on arrival.

Police said four men were caught following a tip-off. They said they had information that Shaqeel always kept at least Rs 1 lakh in his shop and this prompted them to commit the heist.

“Their friend Mehboob told them that Shaqeel was into the hawala business. On the day of the robbery,Mehboob was waiting outside Shakeel’s shop. As they were fleeing after robbing the shop employees, Sultan caught Manzar (one of the robbers) by his hand. To free his friend from Sultan’s grip,Alam (another robber) shot at him. All of them escaped after that, firing in the air to deter people from coming near them,” Srivastava said.
