Police said Singh had gone to Abhinandan Vatika off the Najafgarh-Bahadurgarh road on Sunday evening for attending a private function when the incident occurred. Around 8 pm, eight men got off a car near the venue gates, ran up to Singh and those accompanying him, and fired on them, police said.

The assailants then got into the car in which they came and drove off. Local residents and the organisers of the function informed police.

Singh and two of his aides, who suffered bullet injuries, were rushed to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon. Singh was admitted to the ICU, but later succumbed to injuries, police said.

“Former MLA Bharat Singh was declared dead, according to the report we received from the doctors at the hospital where he was admitted,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Southwestern range) T S Luthra said.

Police said Singh was hit by five bullets — one pierced his head, the rest his chest. Singh’s personal security officer and a colleague, who were injured, were in a stable condition, police said.

Until Sunday night, police had not registered a case of murder and attempt to murder, but said they would do so soon. Police suspect personal rivalry to be the motive behind the killing. The assailants are yet to be identified, but police said they had got some leads about the group the assailants might belong to.

Singh had won the Assembly elections in 2008 on an INLD ticket. He was defeated by BJP’s Ajit Singh Kharkhari in 2013.
