Former MLA,kin arrested over death of 27-yr-old woman

A former Congress MLA and his family members have been arrested in connection with the death of his daughter-in-law.

A former Congress MLA and his family members have been arrested in connection with the death of his daughter-in-law. Rekha (27),who was married to the eldest son of former MLA Shadi Ram,was found dead in her house in Keshavpuram on Saturday evening.

The incident was reported after Shadi Ram’s son Sudhanshu found his wife’s body hanging from one of the ceiling fans of their house. He informed Rekha’s father Ashok Choudhary,after which police were informed.

According to police,Rekha’s family had earlier alleged harassment over dowry.

Following investigation,police arrested Shadi Ram,his wife Dharamvati,Rekha’s husband Sudhanshu and Shadi Ram’s other daughter-in-law Manisha on Sunday.

The four were produced before a city court and Sudhanshu was sent to two-day police custody. The others three have been sent to judicial custody.

Police said they were also looking for Manisha’s husband Surender,who had been absconding since the incident.

Meanwhile,on Monday,Rekha’s family held protests outside Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital,alleging that police had allowed Surender to escape.

The protests blocked the movement of traffic on Outer Ring Road for nearly two hours. Eventually,senior officers had to go to the spot to disband the protesters and allow traffic to move again.

According to police,Rekha’s post-mortem examination will be conducted at the Safdarjung hospital on Tuesday.

An SDM-level inquiry has already been ordered into the incident,police said.

Rekha and Sudhanshu married in 2012. Police said for the last six months,Rekha had been living with her parents after

her husband allegedly asked her to leave.

Rekha’s father Ashok alleged that he sent his daughter back to her in-laws’ house a few days before her death so that she could celebrate Diwali there.
